Orbach Sworn-in as Director of Energy Department's Office of Science

WASHINGTON, DC - The Department of Energy announced today that Raymond Orbach has been sworn-in as the director of the department’s Office of Science. Orbach was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 4.

“Ray’s over three decades experience as a practicing scientist and his demonstrated leadership skills as an administrator who led a major university campus will serve the department well,” Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham said.

With an annual budget of $3.3 billion, the Office of Science is the principal funding agency of the nation’s research programs in high-energy physics, nuclear physics and fusion energy sciences. The office also manages research programs in basic energy sciences, biological and environmental sciences, and computational science, all of which also support the missions of the department. The office is responsible for the management of 10 of the department’s laboratories and for constructing and operating large scientific user facilities.

The director of the Office of Science also serves as the science advisor to the Secretary of Energy and is the vice chair of the department’s Research and Development Council.

Orbach, a theoretical physicist, has been chancellor of the University of California, Riverside, since 1992. From 1982 to 1992, Orbach served as provost of the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. He joined the University of California in 1963 and became a full professor in 1966. Orbach received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from California Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley.
