Science.gov 2.0 Launch

Remarks prepared
for U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham

Thank you, Dr. Orbach.

It is my great pleasure to welcome everyone here today for the launch of a very successful E-government initiative – Science.gov 2.0.

This new version of Science.gov provides rapid – and now relevant – one-stop, online access to Federal science information. It’s a gateway into our nation’s exceptional science, and an outstanding achievement, providing a significant resource for our researchers, for our businesses, for academia, and for the American public.

What’s more, this endeavor reflects an unprecedented level of voluntary Federal interagency collaboration.

Championed by the Department of Energy’s Office of Scientific and Technical Information – OSTI for short – the Science.gov initiative is made possible through the cooperative efforts of the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Education, Health and Human Services and Interior, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency, the Government Printing Office, the National Aeronautics Space Administration, and the National Science Foundation, with support from the U.S. National Archives & Records Administration.

These agencies together have combined innovative technology, forward thinking, and hard work to build an invaluable science tool. From the most current information on new technologies, to historical research results, to the most pressing medical advancements, Science.gov connects citizens to the world of science.

It is especially pleasing to note DOE’s contribution in bringing relevance ranking to government science through the latest version of Science.gov. Thank you to OSTI for the vision. And thank you to the Small Business Innovation Research Program for supporting the R&D that made the vision a reality.

I would also like to thank this remarkable interagency Alliance for its continued resourcefulness and diligence in support of Science.gov, and for so creatively pursuing and promoting the E-government component of the President’s Management Agenda.
I am confident this partnership will continue discovering ways to make the nation’s science knowledge base more available than ever before.

Now let’s complete this connection to the world of science.
 With the help of Sharon Jordan, we will now launch Science.gov 2.0.
