The Chemical Sciences subprogram supports a major portion of the Nation's fundamental research in the chemical sciences. The research covers those areas of the chemical sciences that impact the Department's energy and environmental missions.  Research supported covers atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) sciences; chemical physics; photo- and radiation chemistry; surface chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis; organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis; analytical and separation science; heavy element chemistry; and aspects of chemical engineering sciences.  This research provides a foundation for fundamental understanding of the interactions of atoms, molecules, and ions with photons and electrons; the making and breaking of chemical bonds in gas phase, in solutions, at interfaces, and on surfaces; and understanding the energy transfer processes within and between molecules.
