Dr. Schwartz joined the Material Science and Engineering Division of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences at the Department of Energy in January 2008 as a manager for the Experimental Condensed Matter Physics program.  He received his BA in Physics from Amherst College and his PhD in Physics from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).  His doctoral research focused on the electrodynamic response of various low-dimensional conductors in both their high-temperature metallic states and low-temperature broken-symmetry ground states. He then spent three years as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Maryland studying the microwave properties of colossal magnetoresistive oxides and high temperature superconductors.  Before coming to DOE, he was at two small companies—Neocera, Inc. and Solid State Measurements, Inc.—leading the development of a localized, non-contact materials analysis instrument for use in semiconductor manufacturing.  Dr. Schwartz has co-authored over 30 technical papers; holds 6 issued U.S. patents; and is a member of the American Physical Society, the Materials Research Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
