The Geosciences Research Program  supports research aimed at developing  an understanding of fundamental  Earth processes that can be used as a  foundation for efficient, effective, and environmentally sound use of energy  resources, and provide an improved scientific basis for advanced energy and environmental technologies.
 

 Currently, the Program's primary research interests are:

  • Geochemistry of Mineral-Fluid Interactions
    • Rates and mechanisms of reaction at the atomistic/molecular scale
    • Coupled flow and reactivity in porous and fractured rocks
    • Isotopic tracking of mineral-mineral and mineral-fluid processes
  • Geophysical Interrogation of the Earth's Crust
    • Indirect determination of geologic structure and rock properties
    • Collection and analysis of seismic and electromagnetic data
    • Geophysical signatures of fluids and fluid-bearing reservoirs
  • Basic Properties of Rocks, Minerals, and Fluids
    • Analyses of multi-phase, heterogeneous, anisotropic systems
    • Determine physical, chemical, mechanical properties
    • Analysis of rock deformation, flow, fracture, and failure
    • Prediction of fluid transport in large-scale geologic structures
  • Analytical Instrumentation and Computational Methods
    • High-resolution geophysical imaging and inversion tools
    • Angstrom-scale resolution in analysis of heterogeneous minerals
    • Advanced computational modeling and algorithm development

Who conducts the research and how are they selected?

Researchers in our program are leading scientists and engineers at DOE laboratories and the Nation's academic institutions. Research projects frequently involve joint participation of university and laboratory staff on a partnership basis. Research projects are selected on the basis of peer review of detailed research proposals. The projects are frequently inter-disciplinary and involve participation of undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and senior scientists.

Research activities under this program are often closely coupled with research supported by the NSF, other Federal agencies, or by the USGS through participation of their professional staff.
