Who conducts the research and how are they selected? Researchers in our program are leading scientists and engineers at DOE laboratories and the Nation's academic institutions. Research projects frequently involve joint participation of university and laboratory staff on a partnership basis. Research projects are selected on the basis of peer review of detailed research proposals. The projects are frequently inter-disciplinary and involve participation of undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and senior scientists. Research activities under this program are often closely coupled with research supported by the NSF, other Federal agencies, or by the USGS through participation of their professional staff.
