Hydrated carbon monoxymyoglobin: Of critical importance to a protein are the positions, orientations, and interactions of hydrogen atoms, which are invisible to x-rays. Neutron diffraction was used to determine this detailed structure of myoglobin, an O2/CO2 shuttle present in muscle tissue, and 87 water molecules (fireballs) that are an integral part of it (Brookhaven).
