The amino acid residues (456) of bactericidal-
permeability-increasing protein (BPI) fold into a boomerang-shaped protein of two nearly identical folding domains. Each domain has a cavity occupied by a lipid molecule. BPI binds to lipids of the outer coat of bacteria, thus killing the bacteria (UCLA-DOE).
