Understanding the structures of proteins to probe the mechanisms of cancers and viral afflictions such as the common cold and AIDS are representative goals of research supported by DOE national facilities. Structural biology provides the underpinnings for disease prevention and therapy, rational design of pharmaceuticals, environmental remediation, and consumer product innovation.
