This is a photograph of a subsurface drilling rig operated by Texaco. Office of Biological and Environmental Research scientists in the Subsurface Science Program collaborated with Texaco to recover intact cores from nearly four kilometers beneath the surface. Unique species of thermophilic bacteria were recovered, described in the scientific literature, and deposited in the Department of Energy's Subsurface Microbial Culture Collection.
