Next generation linear colliders (NLC) will require large quantities of ultra-stable quadrupole focusing magnets along the beamline, with magnetic center shifts less than 1.4 micrometers.  Conventional magnets would have difficulty obtaining this stability.  Not only are capital and operating costs high, unwanted vibrations are caused by cooling water.  This project will modify a permanent magnet (PM) multipole beamline optic design with remotely variable magnetic field strength and centerline adjustment to satisfy the stringent needs for the NLC.  Besides gaining ultra-stablility, the capital and operating costs will be substantially less than conventional electromagnets (EM) because high current power supplies and cooling water are eliminated.   Magnetic and engineering analysis will be performed during Phase I to modify the existing PM quadrupole design in order to achieve the 1.4 micrometer centerline stability.  A design verification test will be performed to verify the ability to control the centerline position and achieve automatic temperature compensation.

 

Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Multipole optical elements, such as quadrupoles, sextupole, and octopoles, are used in all accelerator systems, including research, medical, and industrial accelerators, and synchrotron storage rings.  The adjustable multipole PM elements should have the advantage of eliminating the need for high current power supplies and cooling water with significant capital and operating cost savings.    Also, the PM design is inherently compact and can be used where conventional EMs cannot fit.
